As soon as the first star appears on Christmas Eve in Poland it is time for supper. Until that moment in the day nobody eats.

The table is spread with a little straw to reminding everyone of the stable in Bethlehem. On top of that is a clean white cloth and a feast for Christmas. Before the meal of soup, fish, noodles, poppy seeds, dumplings with sauerkraut and mushrooms followed by jelly (kiseil) cakes, fruit and nuts there is always a prayer in thanksgiving. Usually the family eat little wafers which have been stamped with figures of the holy family.
The table is always laid with an even number of places, but one place is left empty for the Christ child. An unexpected guest is welcome to fill this place however.
The Christmas tree is lit, carols sung and prayers said. In some places the star men come to question the children on their catechism. Three young men will dress up as the three wise men and bring gifts for everybody.
At midnight the bells are rung calling everybody to Pasterka (Shepherds' Mass). The church is decorated with Christmas trees and coloured lights. The creche is a focal point. It stays in place until January 6th.
