Ballymoney Nursery School was founded during the Second World War in a village outside the town. It is now situated in the town and has been in existence on this site for over thirty years. The school is funded by The Department of Education and is run by a Board of Governors under the North Eastern Education and Library Board.

We offer free places to seventy-eight children and have a long-standing tradition of providing integrated pre-school education in the Ballymoney area. Applications are received each January for a place starting the following September. Currently children attend for one year prior to starting Primary School. The school runs three sessions with twenty-six children in each and we are in operation five days each week
The times of the sessions are as follows;

Full time 9.00am. to 1.30pm.
Morning 9.00am. to 11.30am.
Afternoon 12.30pm. to 3.00pm..

There are four permanent qualified members of staff, two Teachers and two Nursery Assistants. The teachers hold special qualifications in Early Childhood Education as well as their teaching qualifications. One Nursery Assistant holds a B.T.E.C. and the other has a NVQ Level 3 Qualification.

The Curriculum is organised to offer opportunities for the children to develop Physically, Socially, Emotionally and Intellectually. Activities are planned to support language, mathematical, scientific technological and creative development. The school has a wide variety of materials and equipment to foster all aspects of a child’s development through play. Many themes are used when planning the Curriculum and these give the children opportunities to actively learn about their world

To enhance the work done in the school visits are arranged e.g. to the zoo or farm and many outside agencies visit the school. We have visits from The Fire Service, Ambulances, Policemen with motor cycles and cars, Nurses, Dentists, Musicians etc. and many animals and items of interest are brought in for the children to handle and observe.

We pride ourselves on the use made of our outdoor area and the vast array of equipment in place there. We make full use of this area to promote the children’s physical development and their interest in and knowledge of the natural world.

We work in close partnership with the parents of the children. Through this we can share the children’s achievements and any problems they may have. Throughout the year parents have formal and informal opportunities to discuss the development of their children with the staff. Evenings are arranged for parents and they are given the opportunity to suggest speakers they wish to hear.
