Kylemore Nursery School is situated in
the Killowen area of Coleraine, west of the River Bann. Although situated
within a mature Housing Executive development, the school has historically
drawn its enrolment from the wider community in Coleraine. The ethos
of the school reflects evidence of long standing cross-community relations
and positive partnerships with other schools in the locality. In our
Nursery, we operate very much as a team, through the involvement of
all staff with the needs of the child and the constant pooling of
ideas and skills in the management of the school day. The progress
of individual children is discussed daily, along with ideas for themes
or current interests or any concerns individual members of staff may
be experiencing.
 |
Great support is derived
from each other, advice is sought and experiences shared, and
through this approach it is hoped that a shared vision and commitment
will be achieved. We as teachers supply a programme of planned
experiences and participate in these with the children, as well
as observing their activities and behaviour throughout the school
day |
Often we work around
a theme with which the children will be able to identify e.g.
seasonal activities such as autumn or the sea-side, and the
children learn through these first-hand experiences to understand
their world. We have had particular success observing the life
cycles of frogs, chicks and butterflies, and the children were
enthralled as they watched the chick emerge from the egg or
the butterfly from the chrysalis.
|
 |
They all found these experiences with Nature fascinating and in the
Nursery we take pride in the fact that we offer the opportunity, often
for the first time, for the children to observe these wonders. We
also firmly believe that if planned thoughtfully and carefully, outdoor
play not only enhances good health and increases physical skills,
but also contributes to the all-round development of the child. .
 |
Our outside area is
a great source of pleasure for all of us and its full use and
development plays an important part in our curriculum. |
There is an open
invitation to parents to participate in our themes or to offer particular
skills, and they are always made welcome in the school at any time.
They are also encouraged to accompany us on any trips or outings,
and information has been made available on counselling services for
parents together with the addresses and telephone numbers of other
relevant bodies. Individual parent interviews are also held to discuss
the children's progress and parents have found these interviews both
useful and informative.
