Representatives of all the participating schools met in the Netherlands in November 1997 to draw up an action plan for the project. As an added support to the teachers involved in this initial meeting, the principals of the four schools also attended. The "Euro Environment" project was developed to enable the pupils involved to become more aware of the European dimension and to help strengthen their regional and European identities.
Each school in the project agreed to involve three class groupings. In the Autumn Term, each pupil was paired with at least one pupil from another country. The pupils shared photographs and information about themselves, their families, their schools and their interests. While the total number of pupils involved in Year 1 of the project was 307, project work is displayed in the four schools for all pupils to see.
In the Spring Term 1998, a transnational meeting was held in Tallaght, County Dublin. again, all participating schools were represented. the pupils provided materials depicting their favourite locations within their own environment using classwork, drawings, photographs etc.
In the Summer Term 1998, all classes worked on the preparation of materials, information and drawings on legends and folktales linked to their own areas. Completed project work was reviewed and shared at a transnational meeting in Tours in May 1998. In June 1998, each school held a European Exhibition to which pupils and parents were invited to attend. Pupils included in the project from Drumgor Primary School and St.Martin de Porres National School met for a day during the Summer Term 1998.
All schools were in agreement that the project had been beneficial to date, and that the pupils involved had derived much value from their work. The teachers felt that they had been able to extend their personal development as transnational meetings with partner schools provided an opportunity to learn about the education systems in other countries.
Year 2 of the project begins in September 1998 and will focus on the themes of Tourism and Sport and Leisure. Time will also be spent on giving pupils the opportunity to exchange information about themselves, as many new pupils will be involved in the project for the first time. Three transnational meetings are planned, in N.Ireland, Holland and France.
