Summary of points agreed :

Completion of forms recording time spent on project work.

These forms are to be kept as a record of the hours spent by each participant on project work from the beginning until the end of Year 1 in June 1998. Completed forms are to be submitted at the meeting in June.

Clarification : Hours spent by teachers on trialling materials are also to be recorded. Please note : participants (including teachers) are NOT paid additional money for this work. This work is counted by Comenius as the financial contribution of partners to the overall project costs (see Section E of the original application form).

Action : By all project participants

 

Cost of production of materials.

Materials are to be produced in draft (provisional) format ONLY by each partner for the meeting in June, when the materials will be reviewed and agreed by all partners.

Clarification : The budget element for production of materials in the original application was ECU7500 to produce 50 copies of the whole pack ( 10 copies per partner). However, on account of the reduced grant it was agreed at the co-ordinators' meeting in N.Ireland in December that production and dissemination costs would be deferred to Year 2 if necessary (see Item 2 of the report of the co-ordinators' planning meeting).

 

Completion of form of partner details.

Forms were completed during the meeting. These will be collated into a project handbook to be circulated to all partners.

Action : Mike Donaghy

 

Provision of electronic mail facilities for partners.

Partners without electronic mail were asked to determine the cost of installing this facility in their organisation and to forward this information to Mike Donaghy as soon as possible (cost of dedicated telephone line, modem and service provider only - NOT computer)

Action : France (IUFM Fondettes) , Spain

 

Video-conferencing.

Two dates were provisionally agreed for video-conferencing links:

Tuesday 31/03/98 / Tuesday 28/04/98.

Partners were asked to confirm the availability and cost of local facilities to enable them to participate in these links.

Action : All partners as soon as possible. Confirmation to Mary Yarr.

Information needed from each partner as indicated on the flow chart (page presented at the meeting).

Date and venue of next meeting.

The dates of the next meeting were confirmed as :

Wednesday 3 June (arrival) - Sunday 7 June (departure).

The venue was confirmed as Denmark.

It was proposed that the autumn meeting will take place in Tours France. Suggested dates (11/11/98, 18/11/98, 25/11/98) to be confirmed at June meeting.

Action : Danish partner to confirm venue and cost as soon as possible. Details to Caitriona Hughes.

Action : Caitriona Hughes to confirm venue and travel arrangements with all partners.

 

Teaching materials to be produced.

The following points were emphasised :

the aims, approach and proposed outcomes should be simple, manageable and achievable

the materials to be produced by each partner should be centred on the theme for Year 1 : The Origins of Difference : Journeys".

the project will make effective use of Information Technology where appropriate, for example, electronic mail, Internet, video-conferencing, CD-ROM.

 

Following discussion of the theme for Year 1 of the project, each partner proposed to develop teaching materials on this theme as follows.

Sweden

Booklet containing photographs of children and short text / video clip of interviews.

4 or 5 stories from children telling about their journey to Sweden - reasons, feelings, journey, situation in their new country. Why? / When? / Where from? / How did they travel?

Every child interviewed reads his/her story.

 

Denmark

Collection of drawings photographs, limited text and short audio tape of music from different countries. Number of children interviewed. Children interview parents /grandparents asking : Why?/When?/Where from?/How did they travel?

Collection of data and music reflecting different groups.

 

Spain

Brochure or wallet including maps, pictures on overhead transparencies.

Examination of peoples who have come to this part of Spain (Andalucia), including Celts, Iberians, Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Venetians, Arabs. Why?/When?/Where from?/How did they travel?

What features did they leave behind?

 

Northern Ireland

Picture pack - 4 pictures or images for each of 5 periods in history including captions and activity sheets.

Examination of peoples who have come to this part of Ireland, including Early Man, Vikings, Normans, Spanish, modern immigrants. Why?/When?/Where from?/How did they travel?

Contrasting similarities / differences.

 

France

Posters , video

Historical aspect - examination of common European roots (as in Spanish proposal).

Cultural aspect - examination of what national identity means to children : mental image of what it means to be French. Compare these images of nationality with those of the other European children.

 

Action : All partners to develop and trial these materials February - May 1998. Materials to be brought to the June meeting for review.

 

Note : Please remember the themes for each year of the project.

Year 1 : "The Origins of Difference : Journeys".

Year 2 : "The Experience of Difference : Conflict and settlement"

Year 3 : "The Accommodation of Difference : Living Together".

 

Materials produced for Year 1 should include the element of Journeys and should not include too much material from the themes of Years 2 and 3.
