Summary of points agreed:

Session 1 - Day 1: Administration and broad review of objectives.

Completion of forms regarding times spent on project work.

These forms are to be kept as a record of the hours spent by each participant on project work from the beginning until the end of year 1 in June 1998. It was agreed that completed forms would be with Mike Donaghy by the end of June 1998.

It was stated once again that there is no additional money to pay teachers for either preparing or trialling this material. This work is counted by Comenius as the financial contribution of partners to the overall project costs. (section E of the original application form). Hours spent by teachers on trialling materials should be recorded on these forms.

Action : by all project participants.

Completion of form of partner details.

These forms had been completed by most partners in January. A first draft of the project booklet was presented by Mike Donaghy for review and correction. Any alterations or additions should be sent to Mike Doanaghy by the end of June.

Action: By all partners to Mike Donaghy by agreed date - end of June 1998.

Provision of electronic mail facilities for partners.

The importance of effective and speedy communication was emphasised. Unfortunately not all partners have access to an effective E-Mail or fax machine and Mike Donaghy urged increased efforts to remedy this problem.

Action: All partners as soon as possible

Video-conferencing.

It was decided that it would be better to abandon the video conferencing since only two of the partners would be able to take part. Spain, France and Denmark faced severe difficulties and prohibitive costs.

Information for Internet Page.

The Internet page will contain details of each partner's education system and cultural and historical sites. Much of this information had already been presented but it was stressed that any additional material should be sent to Mike Donaghy by the end of June 1998. Mike has undertaken to update the Internet page by the end of August '98.

Action: By all partners by end June 1998 for Mike Donaghy to add to Web Site.

Expenditure for year 1 and prospects for year 2

A summary of expenditure up to date was presented by Mike Donaghy and Catriona Hughes. The reduced grant meant that the cost of production of materials would be deferred to year 2. It was suggested that money might also be saved by reducing the amount of planning days. It will be important to keep within budget. Outstanding invoices or receipts should be sent to Caitriona Hughes, indicating to whom the money should be paid and in which currency.

Departure of Mike Donaghy and Caitriona Hughes.

Sessions 2 and 3

Production of draft materials and guidelines

(as outlined in Action Point 8, Minutes Granada Meeting)

Theme 1 Origins of Difference

A summary of the materials presented by each partner is attached to these minutes. However one partner, the Danish, has experienced difficulties in moving forward since our last meeting in January and was therefore unable to present a first draft of materials on Theme 1.

The payments, normally expected by all Danish teachers for any developmental work or trialling of materials are (as already emphasised in point 1 of these minutes) not permitted under the Comenius 3.1 project regulations. Our Danish partners explained their problem and indicated that they might be forced to withdraw from the project. They agreed that it would be necessary to clarify their position as soon as possible and that, if continuing with the project, a first draft of Theme 1 should be sent to Mike Donaghy by the end of June 1998.

All other partners, French, Spanish, Swedish and N.Irish confirmed their commitment to trial, evaluate and complete a final draft of Theme 1 for our next meeting in November.

On Day 2, 4th June, all the partners successfully designed and drafted guide-lines, for the individual projects and for the whole pack. These are also included with these minutes.

Action:

All partners : completion of final draft of Theme 1 materials after further trialling and evaluation by all partners attending next meeting.

The Danish : to explore other means of preparing and trialling first draft due for the Dublin meeting. To confirm continuation in project and sent first draft to Mike Donaghy for 30 June deadline.

Dates and venues for next meetings - Nov/Dec '98 and May'99

It was agreed that it would be important for all partners to be able to review the final draft of Theme I and plan for Theme 2 in November or early December. It was recognised that it was important that this task was completed before the deadline of December 1998 for delivery of Theme 1.

Two dates were proposed:

12 -15 November 1998 : France

or

28 November - 1 December : France

Since our meeting in Dublin a fax from France has confirmed the

12 - 15 November 1998.

Date for presentation and review of first draft of Theme 2 "Conflict and settlement".

The following dates and venue were proposed and agreed in Dublin.

Dates: 5 May - 9 May 1999

Venue: probably Sweden

Action: All partners to note 12 -15 November 1998 and 5 - 9 May in their diaries.

France to confirm accommodation to Caitriona Hughes as soon as possible.

Theme 1 - Origins of Difference

Summary of draft materials presented by each partner

Sweden

One booklet translated into 5 languages and a video.A booklet of 5 children's stories and pictures was presented. The children tell their personal history and memories of their homeland and journey to Sweden. Each story is accompanied by the child's drawing of something significant to them. A video showing each child reading their story and playing with their new friends is included with the pack.

France

Final draft will include a booklet report of children's site visit and activities and a series of slides taken from each video. The children will examine their common European roots. Two classes were involved in the development of these materials and two videos and a booklet report was presented. The first video shows children learning about their earliest common ancestors through a residential visit to a pre-history site. The children are shown working through a series of tasks, for example, making fire. In the second video we see children presenting a report on the topic. In addition the children have produced a report of their visit and background information illustrated with colour photographs and children's own drawings. The project looked at common links and the different places all the children came from.

Northern Ireland

Collection of activities, word cards, maps, symbols and visual images showing key features and origins of 5 groups of people who came to Ireland - Mesolithic, Viking, Norman, Spanish and modern emigrants. Children will create their own images and symbols for modern emigrants. This project examines the origins and key features of 4 different people who came to Ireland in the past and compares to modern emigrants. It asks children to think about why, when, and how people came and where they came from. The materials include a set of images and descriptions which the children match, sort and sequence. The outcomes will include completed timelines and profiles; mapping exercises and presentation of information through pictures, story and creative dance.

Spain

Series of coloured OHT's showing routes of earlier migrants to Spain and extent of settlement. Will include one example of legacy left by each - Celts, Phoenicians, Romans and Arabs. Simple text providing background information. This project looks at people who came to Spain - where they came from and when they came. Their route to Spain is traced in a series of OHT maps which are colour coded to show the different routes and extent of influence. Photographs and 3 -D illustrations of buildings or other features created by each of these people are also on OHT. The different languages they brought to Spain will also be identified as part of their legacy.

Denmark

Proposed outcome - collection of stories of 4 or 5 children who have recently come to live in Denmark telling a little about their history and feelings about the changes in their lives. To include pictures, text and possibly written text of traditional songs. Recent immigrant children to be interviewed about their memories, their experiences and thoughts - similar to the Swedish project. The Danish project will include drawings and possibly traditional songs from each native country and well as the text of the interview or story.
