Värner Rydén School takes children during the first nine years of their compulsory schooling (from 6-15 years). It is situated in the eastern part of Malmö called Rosengård. At present 850 pupils are registered at the school.
Our school has two units - Värner Rydén - consisting of children from 6-15 years, and Annelund - consisting of children aged 6-9 years.
Since we have the largest number of immigrants in Malmö (95%), we also have four preparatory classes. In these classes we place children who do not speak Swedish and who, because of this, need intensive Swedish training.
To improve Swedish among our pupils and to provide opportunities to use the Swedish language, we arrange a number of activities such as help with homework, story-telling, tennis, gymnastics, football and baking. All these activities give the children further dimensions in their multicultural lives.
The staff who work at Värner Rydén are experienced and trained to teach immigrant children. The staff are stable and very few teachers move. We have a decentralised organisation and a lot of responsibility rests upon the senior members of staff.
Värner Rydén also has an immigrant unit responsible for and co-ordinating all mother tongue education in Malmö. At the moment we have 120 teachers, teaching 35 different languages. By law, immigrant children are entitled to mother tongue tuition.
The immigrant unit also handles all registration of newly arrived immigrant pupils moving into Malmö. We check on their residence permits, state of health, etc. Afterwards the children are referred to the school closest to their home address.
