

During the war years of 1939 to 1945, people in Britainhad to put up with quite severe food shortages and mostof our food was strictly rationed. Here are a some of the ways that people used theirrationed food in an inventive way to make interesting and appetising meals. If you can you can why not have a weekend, ora day, filled with recipes that your grandparents might have eaten. Get themaround to help you cook them. Have fun. Soup: Cheese soup Ingredients.
| SOUP INGREDIENTS Method: Add the onion or leeks and margarine to milk and water,bring to the boil, cook at a simmer for 15 minutes, stirring gently.Blend theflour with a little milk, stir in and cook for a few minutes to thickenmixture.Add cheese and seasoning. Stir until the cheese is melted, do not allowto boil. Add parsley and serve hot. | 2 tablespoons of chopped leek or onion ,or bothmixed together. 2 tablespoons of flour, 1 cup of grated cheese. 2 cups ofmilk(powdered if necessary). 2 cups of water, 2 tablespoons of choppedparsley,11/2 oz of margarine and finally salt and pepper. |
| MEAT ROLL INGREDIENTS Method; Soak the stale bread in water until moist. Squeeze outthe water and mash together with the sausage meat, the mashed beans,mustard andthyme. Add gravy browning until it is all a dark brown. Press firmly into agreased 2lb stone jam jar or tin and steam for 2 hours. Roll in brownbreadcrumbs and serve hot with gravy. | 4oz stale bread, 3/4lb of sausage meat, 5oz of pintobeans, cooked and mashed, 1 teaspoon of powdered mustard, 1 teaspoon of thyme,gravy browning, browned breadcrumbs, pepper and salt. |
PUDDING INGREDIENTS Method; Wipe the rhubarb and cut it into small pieces. Simmerwith the syrup in a dish until cooked and place in the bottom of an ovenproofdish. Rub the fat into the flour, salt and sugar until the mixture is like finebreadcrumbs. Sprinkle over the stewed fruit. Bake in a moderate oven for 15 - 20minutes. | 1lb of rhubarb, 2 tablespoons of golden syrup.11/2oz of fat, 4oz of plain flour, 3 tablespoons of sugar and a pinch of salt.
