The Sopwith Camel was
probably the most famous fighter of World War I. It was produced in very
large numbers played a vital part in the final months of conflict.
Herbert Smith began to work on a Sopwith Pup replacement in the summer
of 1916. The first deliveries of the camel were in May 1917, joined the
RFC (Royal Flying Corps). Camels were mostly used as flying scouts,
but some were used as ground-attack aircraft or night fighters by home
defence squadrons.
