Tess of the D'Urbervilles is set at around the time of its publication in the C19th, in Hardy's idea of Wessex. Tess is a headstrong girl but she falls pregnant in her teens after being raped by Alec D'Urberville. It turns out that he is not actually a relative of Tess. At the end of the book Tess murders Alec D'Urberville and is hanged. I enjoyed the plot of this book but I found that it was hard to follow because it was broken up by long bits of description. I would recommend this book to people who are fast readers who have long periods of time for reading.
