In a vast and shadowy city of old skyscrapers, neglected warehouses, juice stands and coffee shops Joseph Spring, a rumpled, middle-aged man in a suit and a hat wanders the streets photographing buildings. He ponders the detail, the scent of the past that falls onto the present, the ghosts of other cultures embedded on the urban landscape, people and behaviours almost gone. He sees what others overlook. This book is an antidote to the homogenising antiseptic slickness of recent decades, which speaks of a sad but beautiful clarity.
