A Sporting Account From Cherwell School

During my years at Cherwell I have enjoyed participating in all manner of different sports not least basketball. Cherwell has a high tradition of producing successful teams in the sport throughout the lower years as well as the sixth form. In my year, year eleven, we have had memorable triumphs at county level but at national level we have failed to capitalise on our potential. A large part of this is due to illness or injury of some kind to key players. For the past two seasons we have won the county competition without losing a game. Unfortunately major injury and long spells in hospital prevented me from playing my usual dominant role for most of last season. Last year was our first real taste of national competition where we hoped to travel all over the country playing teams of a high standard. This, however, proved to be elusive and we were sadly eliminated in the regional group stages. Despite this we take heart in the fact that the only team to beat us were one of the best in the country, overflowing with international talent.
An account of my life in sports at Cherwell
by Steven Dodd
(Cherwell Year 11 Student & Basketball Player)
During my sporting life in Cherwell so far I have enjoyed the compulsory P.E. course in which we are able to broaden our sporting interests by playing new sports and also enjoy some of the old favourites. I have also enjoyed the sports studies G.C.S.E. course which I chose to take and have learned a lot about the practical and theoretical parts of sport . However the most enjoyable part of sport at Cherwell has been playing for my year's basketball team.
Our team's story began two seasons ago when we dominated all comers gaining qualification for the following season's national competition. Our season began the next year with heightened expectations of success in the national competition and complete dominance in the county competition. Unfortunately this was not to be the case as our team's undoubted potential was hampered by injury and although we were able to cruise through the county competition we were not able to progress past the first round of the nationals being dumped out by the rampant European school from Abingdon .This year's basketball season has already begun and although myself and my friends' long term injuries have kept us from playing so far we should be playing again soon and then our team's star potential may finally be realised.
