Targets for Health and Fitness

Return to PE Index Page

As a department we are targeting Years 10 and 11 in a new Health and Fitness campaign. We hope that educating the pupils in the importance of achieving and sustaining a healthy lifestyle will encourage them to continue with physical activity after school and to take pride in their own well being.
So far this term, Year 10 have undergone the nationally recognised multi-stage fitness test. It is the department's aim to use the test three times a year to show any improvements in levels of fitness.
The CSA has helped to equip the Weights Room with a rowing machine, running machine, an exercise bike, punch bags, speed balls and free weights. All pupils in Years 10 and 11 are being trained to us the equipment during lessons and in after school clubs and staff are encouraged to use the equipment in their free time! This room has been very popular and is in great demand by all the Cherwell Community.

Concerns over the State of Students' Health & Fitness Levels
has gradually grown over the last decade.

Newman 1986: "There is increasing evidence that coronary heart disease may have its origins in childhood and that physical activity can help reduce the risk of developing some of the risk factors in early life."

Armstrong 1991: "Children should be exercising in their target heart rate zone at least three times per week for a minimum period of twenty minutes in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle."

There is a threshold level of physical activity necessary for health and physical fitness.
Implications:
  1. An increase in P.E. on the timetable: More hours per fortnight for Years 10 and 11

  2. Review of teaching methods

  3. New initiatives e.g. "Vitality for Life."

  4. Wider range of extra-curricular activities.
