There are two main types of search tools, web directories and search engines

Web directories are well organised lists of topics and sub-topics through which you navigate to find a web site that matches what you are looking for; this is like consulting a huge index. Recommended if you are browsing but not looking for a particular piece of information.

Search engines do the searching for you by following instructions you give them. The more detailed the instructions the better the search will be.
