A managed service is a combination of networking, hardware, software and content, training and support which gives an educational or learning institution access to a range of content and facilities. A managed service may be provided by a number of suppliers, combining the facilities offered by individual companies or organisations.

A managed service functions as a "one stop shop" for an educational or learning institution's ICT requirements to provide a complete package of systems and services with one point of contact for support. They include all the necessary hardware, software, networking and technical support facilities to provide networked access to the Internet and the NGfL.
