Some of us kept asking our teacher if we could start a maths club. In the end she said "yes" and we began to meet in November 1997. The next week our teacher showed us the competition; we had to make a pattern of tessellated shapes and use the computer to draw them. They told us to look at an exhibition of pictures by an artist called Escher. Everyone could not meet to go after school, but our teacher brought in a calendar which had lots of Escher's pictures in it. They were weird pictures; one had water flowing downwards and upwards at the same time - it did not make sense. The pictures were complicated, all the paper was full up with bits of the picture. They were too difficult to draw; they were drawn very well. If you scrunched up your eyes you could see different patterns. We looked through every picture and we found the ones which had tessellated shapes in them. There was a really good one with a lizard. You can find more pictures by Escher, and information about him at this Website:
