Special Care

Special Needs
Sometimes despite the best efforts of all concerned with the child's education, extra help is needed. Children with special needs follow the same National Curriculum programmes of study, but at a level appropriate to their individual needs. Some children will need extra support, either individually or in a small group depending on the targets set. The targets are drawn up by the school special needs co-ordinator, the support team, the educational psychologist and the parents. These teams make regular visits to the school to offer advice on all types of learning, speech and behaviour problems.

Speech Therapy:
We have a trained speech therapy assistant on site, who works closely with the Speech Therapy Unit and is able to teach specific learning programmes.

Medical Care
First Aid is administered immediately for small cuts or bumps. If an accident is more serious, then parents will be contacted to take children to hospital. Please notify the school of any change to telephone numbers or addresses as soon as possible, so our emergency contact forms can be kept up to date.
Also please let us know immediately of any medical condition that may affect the child's access to the curriculum.
Children should keep inhalers in their own classrooms for speedy use. Medicines should not be dispensed in school unless accompanied by a letter of instruction and given to the Headteacher to be locked away.
The School Nurse and the School Doctor visit the school on a regular basis and screen new children within their first two years in school. Nurse is willing to help parents with any problems.

Health:
The School Nurse and Community Health Visitor give talks on personal hygiene including dental care, washing hands etc. We have topics based on healthy eating habits, drug misuse and keeping safe. The Fire Department shows videos about fire hazard and the Police have visited to talk about road safety and how to avoid strangers.
Sex Education is taught through our Science programme. When elements of life processes and social responsibilities form part of a topic, the teacher will answer any questions that arise in a manner appropriate to the maturity of the pupils.
