Evidence about Old Northampton
We looked at some maps of old Northampton and a map of new Northampton. We noticed on the new map that there is a shape like a capital D made by the roads called Grafton Street, The Mounts, York Road, Chain Walk and Victoria Promenade. There was exactly the same shape on an old map from 1610.
When we looked carefully we saw that it was the old town wall. We found out that those roads go exactly where the old town walls were. The old town was inside the walls. The castle was where the railway station is now. Lots of streets have names that tell you what happened there like Castle Station, Horsemarket, Horseshoe Street, Sheep Street, Gold Street, Silver Street, The Drapery, Tanner Street, College Street and Freeschool Street.
