Please help us to save his life and his smile.
He
is 7 years old, a natural born survivor who dreams of being a
footballer. Datuna is a bright alert little boy of 7 years of
age, with a beautiful smile. He is an orphan and a victim of severe
child abuse. He lives in the Republic of Georgia, one of the poorest
post-Soviet states, where medical resources and child care services
are precarious and there is no child protection legislation.
When Datuna was three his mother caused him terrible injuries
in order to use him for begging. Neighbours intervened and he
was to spend the next 2 years in hospital. He had several operations
at the time, his spleen and some of his ribs were removed and
Doctors didn’t expect him to live long. But Datuna survived.
He now lives in an alternative orphanage
community called Temi, which is home to a large number of adults
and young people with severe learning difficulties. When he arrived
at Temi 2 years ago, Datuna could not speak, was paralysed from
the waist down and had a deep open wound at the base of his spine.
In spite of his ordeal, Datuna seems determined to live long and
continue smiling. He adores football and says he would love to
play like his hero, Shota Arveladze.
But once again his life is in danger.
The
deep pressure sore at the base of his spine has turned necrotic
and an infection in this wound could kill him. His curvature of
the spine is worsening and he is confined to his bed. He has to
share a room with six mentally handicapped young people and adults
and there is no proper access to medical attention.
In order to save his life, Scottish
spinal injuries specialists, a physiotherapist and a doctor are
willing to donate their time to go out to Georgia on a humanitarian
mission.
We need your help to:
* fund the specialists’ travel to Georgia
* purchase his mobility equipment
* a hospital bed
* wheelchair
* possible future neurosurgery in the UK.
The initial cost is in the region of £5,000.
Time is of the essence.
Please help to save his life.
