Barga
is a medieval city situated on a
hilltop in the valley of the River Serchio. It is about 45 minutes
drive north of Lucca, and Lucca itself is a 20 minute drive from
Pisa. Barga is easily reached by train, car or bus. The closest International
Airports are at Pisa and Florence.
|
 |
If
you travel by train, Barga is found on the Lucca to Aulla line and
you must alight at Barga-Gallicano station. From the station you can
get a taxi (obtainable from the café outside the main station
entrance on your left) or a bus up to Barga. A tip here for you ….. |
 |
If
do travel by bus or train you must validate you ticket at the start
of your journey. At the train station you use the yellow boxes to
validate your ticket and on the buses there is a machine at the
top of the steps on your left as you board the bus, otherwise you
could be in line for a hefty on the spot fine from the ticket Inspectors
that always turn up unexpectedly. |
 |
Barga
has a fine summer music programme including the world famous Jazz
Festival in July and in August there is Opera Barga as well as various
fetes and fairs. Barga also boasts a swimming pool, cinema, tennis
courts, theatre and plenty of good restaurants and bars where you
can sample good local Tuscan cuisine. |
 |
From
your base in Barga you can visit any of the three nature parks in
the area and any of the three spa towns, one of them Bagni di Lucca
is the oldest spa town in Europe.
There is also the seaside town of Viareggio and the winter ski resorts
of Abetone and Radici within easy reach
If you would like to go further afield there are the historic Tuscan
cities of Florence,Pisa,Lucca,Pistoia,Prato, and Sienna all accessible
by train, car or bus.
