The Story Behind Hannukah

Over 2000 years ago Jewish people were ruled by the king of Syria. They were allowed to worship as they wanted until the wicked Antiochus became king. He believed in the Greek religion and wanted the Jews to follow him. The Jews refused and Antiochus was extremely angry. He ordered his soldiers to march into Jerusalem. They killed hundreds of Jews. They then used the temple for playing games and for feasting. The Jews were unable to use it for prayer and they were frightened of soldiers and afraid of what else might happen to them. Mattathias persuaded the Jews that they should fight back. They were not trained soldiers but they were very brave. The battles went on for over two years by which time there was very little food, water or oil left for the city. They finally drove the enemy out of the city and the Jews were free again.
