In the 7th century the prophet Muhammad founded a religion in Arabia which was to become a powerful force in the world. The religion is Islam. Its followers are called Muslims.

Muslims believe that we have gradually learned the truth about God from the teachings of prophets such as Abraham, Moses, John the Baptist and Jesus Christ. They say that Muhammad was the last of the prophets. Followers of Islam are found in the main regions of the Middle East and North Africa and of countries such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia and Nigeria. However, Muslims have travelled and settled in many countries round the world and formed their own communities.
