Martin Luther KING Jr. Born 1929 Died 1968 aged 39

He was an American civil rights leader. He fought for equality for black people in the USA. He fought peacefully to towards his dream that, 'my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character'.

Lady Diana Spencer PRINCESS Of Wales Born 1961 Died 1997 aged 36

The Princess was loved and respected throughout the world for her charity work. She worked to try and persuade the rich and powerful to help people (especially children) who were the helpless victims of wars in her campaign against land mines. She also helped in the fight against the prejudice suffered by people with Aids.

Mother TERESA Born 1910 Died 1997 aged 87

Mother Teresa spent her whole life trying to help the poor in India. She fought a peaceful campaign helping poor forgotten people who were sick. She helped many orphans and Lepers. She made people aware of the terrible conditions some poor people were living in.

Mahatma GANDHI Born 1869 Died 1948 aged 78

He fought for civil rights in India. He saw how unfair life was in India for non-white faced citizens. He was also very involved in changing inequality among his own people where certain members of the population were looked upon as worthless rabble called 'untouchables' just because of the Hindu group into which they had been born. Gandhi was admired for his non-violence strategy in fighting for equality.

Marcus GARVEY Born 1887 Died 1940 aged 52

He was a Jamaican campaigner for the rights of black people. In 1914 he started the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) in Jamaica. In 1917 he took UNIA to America . It printed newspapers, opened community centres and ran a shipping line. His organisation grew rapidly and soon there were branches all over the world. His ideas inspired many others to work towards equality for black people

Nelson MANDELA Born 1918

Nelson Mandela began life farming. He went to university and qualified as a lawyer. He formed the youth league of the African National Congress (ANC) which identified with the hardships and struggles of young black people. Nelson Mandela campaigned throughout his life against the aparthied system in South Africa. In 1964 he was imprisoned for life and even though he was offered his freedom, he chose to stay in prison as a protest until there was political change in the country. Nelson Mandela was released in 1990 and played an important part in establishing democracy in South Africa. He became President of the Country in 1993. He has been promoting peace among all South Africans ever since.
