Designing Web Pages - Standards, Rules and Guidelines at Fairfax |
|
The following standards, guidelines and rules are designed to assist groups in creating sub-web sites and to also keep an element of consistency for the Fairfax site.
General Structure of Fairfax Site
The site is set up in a hierarchical structure. The main index.html and other general indexes are set up in the root internet directory. Each subject has its own directory, as does each house. Pupils can be given a directory underneath the "pupil" directory. Pictures are stored in classified sub-directories underneath the "clipart" directory.
The directory structure is currently (April 1998):
Root
pupils
userid1
userid2
clipart
fairfax
lines
bullets
bckgrnd
etc
coventry
kenilwor
stratfor
warwick
it
geography
dofe
Home Pages and File Names
All departments, houses, other groups and pupils storing pages at Fairfax must use "index.htm" as the index page for their pages within their directory. Please do not use .html for any pages as this causes problems with referencing when used with 8.3 character filing systems such as the Fairfax Novell Server. The main index.html is the only file which should use .html whilst we are in the status quo regarding the file server.
All file names MUST be in LOWER case and a maximum of 8.3 characters long.
Using Clipart
In order to save replication of clipart you are requested to place clipart which could be used by other departments / people in the clipart directories. You will need to seek permission to do this from the Web Master. Any school or departmental logos should be placed in the Clipart/Fairfax directory. Other clipart should be classified accordingly. You should only store clipart in other directories if you are likely to be the only one wanting to use it. All clipart MUST be in JPEG or GIF formats. Bitmaps are not allowed.
Departmental Pages
All departments can have a directory available to them. It is up to each department's own Departmental Web Master as to how the pages are structured within the departmental directory but you are required to keep worksheets in a separate directory to help with speedy updates where large worksheets are concerned. You are also requested to produce a page of useful links which should be called "links.htm" in your departmental directory. Of course, this page may branch off to other pages of categorised links but the first page must be "links.htm".
Worksheets should be classified under key stages (see the ICT pages as an example) but you can also have an area of general worksheets which can be set up in your own style. If you have a logo, then please remember to put this in the Clipart/Fairfax directory and try to save it as a transparent GIF image.
All departments must abide by the frame rules below.
House Pages (also applies to D of E)
All houses should use their appropriate logo on their front page. Each house should use their colour as a background to their pages. Each house is free to use their directory as they wish but are reminded of the need for a hierarchical structure when lots of files are concerned. All houses must abide by the frame rules below.
Pupil Pages
Pupils of Fairfax School are welcome to store pages on the Fairfax Web Site. These pages must be in good taste and must not contain any references to sex, violence, drugs or other illegal / immoral acts. For advice, please contact the Fairfax Web Master. Pupils storing their pages with other ISPs must still abide by the above rules if they wish a link to be placed on the Fairfax Site. Pupils storing pages with Fairfax School must abide by the Frames rules below.
Frames
The Fairfax Home page is set up with frames which make links to other areas of the School Site easily accessible but also easy to update. Please DO NOT set up links on your page which refer to any of the pages already linked in the top frame. Anyone creating pages on the Fairfax Site for ANY purpose MUST at all times keep the top frame in place. This is simple as your pages should never refer to the frame.
If a department, house or individual chooses to use frames then it MUST be a SIDE frame. This must be in addition to and not a replacement for the main TOP frame. Any side frames should be kept narrow (max 3 inches at 640x480 resolution). Any links to exit from a department, house, or pupil area must remove the departmental frame. This includes moving onto other areas of the web although you are welcome to leave the side frame when moving to other areas of the web if an EXIT FROM FRAME or similar option is provided.
Referencing Links
All references to Fairfax Pages MUST be RELATIVE in order for the links to work on both the Internet and Fairfax's Intranet. Please note that the Web Structure on the Intranet starts in F:\apps\intranet but all links must not refer to this directory. You should use the forward slash (/) for directory changes and .. to more up a directory (parent).
Updates
Each Web Master for official school sub-sites is responsible for keeping a LOG of updates made to pages either on the Intranet or on separate disk. The log can be paper based or electronic - both formats are available from the Fairfax Web Master and on the Intranet / Internet. The Web Master will NOT make complete updates of a site as this is much too time consuming and inefficient. Instead, your log should show when the last update to the Internet was made and any pages or documents which have been changed or added since. Deletions should also be logged. An update can be made by the Web Master by prior arrangement.
Pupil pages can also be updated using the same guidelines but each pupil is only entitled to one update per term although substantial effort on the pupils' part may persuade the Web Master otherwise. This update will take place at the end of a term or half-term so required updates should be logged with file names and directories required. Deletions should also be logged.
