Community EDUCATION

"Fowey is a 'Community College'. We believe that education in its broadest sense is a lifelong process and we welcome all members of the community to 'their school' with warmth and openness".

Dr. W.P. Leach.

We have many links with individuals, clubs, societies, churches and other organisations which make up the community. Our involvement begins with the pre-school Playgroup, then embraces cubs, scouts, a youth club, various sports clubs, churches, charitable institutions, evening classes, a summer school and culminates in a senior citizens' luncheon club.

The college publishes, five times a year, a community magazine - 'Connect' - which carries news about both school and community events to around 7,000 houses throughout the area.

PLAYGROUP
The pre-school playgroup, staffed by fully qualified playgroup leaders is attended by about thirty 3-5 year olds, five mornings a week, in a separate unit within the college grounds. The mother and toddler group operates one afternoon per week.

Many Pupils from Years 10 and 11 visit the playgroup to assist the leaders and work with the young children, as part of their Child Development course.

In technology, senior pupils planned, designed and made toys and a play area, for toddlers at a local Health Centre.

EVENING CLASSES

FOWEY CRICKET
The college has a unique (within Cornwall) relationship with the local Cricket Club who prepare the wicket and assist with coaching while we, for our part, maintain the outfield.

A brand new pavilion, with changing and shower facilities, a kitchen, bar and balcony has only recently been completed. This will be of immense value both to the college and the local Cricket teams, a facility of which all can be justly proud.

LUNCHEON CLUB

The Senior Citizens Luncheon Club is operated and hosted, every Friday, by Year 10 pupils. It caters for almost 350 people, from all over the catchement area. they are transported into the college at about 12.30 p.m., served with a three course meal and then looked after and entertained in our purpose built community room. Many of these people have become real friends and we often see them at other functions held at the college.

At Christmas time, the college and the Fowey River Lions work together to provide Christmas lunches and entertainment specially for the occasion. Senior citizens from all over the area are transported to the college and looked after for the entire afternoon.
