Welcome to Fowey
Community College
"...the little grey
sea town I know so well, that clings along one steep side of the harbour. There
through dark doorways you look down flights of stone steps, overhung by great pink
tufts of valerian and ending in a patch of sparkling blue water. The little boats
that lie tethered to the rings and stanchions of the old sea wall are as gaily painted
as those I clambered in and out of in my childhood; the salmon leap on the flood
tide, schools of mackerel flash and play past quay-sides and fore-shores, and by
the open windows the great vessels glide, night and day, up to the moorings or forth
to the open sea.
There, sooner or later,
the ships of all seafaring nations arrived..."
This description of Fowey is as true today, ninety
five years on as it was at the time of writing. The unchanging town and the warmth
and the friendliness of its people typify the area - from the idyllic setting of
Lostwithiel nestling on the hillside, through Castledore, steeped in myth, mystery
and the romance of Tristan and Iseult, to Fowey itself, and across the river to
Polruan and Bodinnick. The villages and towns of Lerryn with its 'wild wood', Golant
with its tiny boats and water lapping the roadside, Tywardreath with its strong
literary connections with Daphne Du Maurier's 'House on the Strand' and the more
urban areas of Par and St. Blazey complete the setting for our College.
People come to Fowey in the blue of the summer and
fall in love - with the town, with the river, with Cornwall and with each other.
