SI and SII Common Course

Home Economics forms part of the common course and contributes to the Technological Activities and Applications mode.

 

Home Economics ClassThe time allocated is 80 minutes per week for Home Economics and an additional 80 minutes per week for one third of the school year for Technology.

The course aims to provide a broad and balanced learning experience for all pupils, laying a secure foundation in life skills for those who will not take the subject beyond S2. The course also leads progressively into Standard Grade and S.V.Q's

 

SI is broken down into:-

  • 2 Food blocks of 10 and 6 weeks respectivelyHE Staff
  • 1 Fabrics block of 10 weeks
  • 1 Healthy Eating block of 6 weeks and
  • 1 Technology block of 13 weeks.

SII is broken down into:-

  • 2 Food blocks of 9 and 7 weeks respectively
  • 1 Fabric Designs brief of 9 weeks
  • 1 Consumer Topic on 'plan a pizza' of 7 weeks
  • 1 Technology block of 13 weeks

 

Home Economics ClassAccount is taken of pupils' levels of attainment both on entering SI and during the course in SI and II, and differentiated materials are used when appropriate.

Profiling is used in all areas to give pupils, parents and Staff an indication of progress throughout. Assessment grades are recorded and used by Staff when completing once-yearly reports.

The SI and SII courses are currently changing in response to 5-14 National Guidelines.
