S. V. S. offers pupils an opportunity to increase many of those skills which they will need when they leave school, enter the workplace and also during leisure time and in the home.

Communicative Abilities - obtaining and giving information.
Practical Abilities - Competence in carrying out instructions and in applying skills.

There are 3 main learning contexts or themes HOME, WORK and COMMUNITY. From these pupils work through a number of experiences both in and out of school. These include planning and running an event, organising a leisure experience, making an item or providing a service.

S. V. S. aims to develop a pupil's self-confidence, to build up initiative and ability to work both alone and in co-operation with others.

To achieve this, much of the course has a pupil-centred approach in which pupils are encouraged to make many of their decisions, to take part in group discussion, increase awareness of individual qualities and create realistic targets.

Over the 2 years of the course assessment is by:-
1] Teaching Staff comparing levels of performance with set standards.
2] A written examination in 4th year set and marked by the S.Q.A.

Over the 2 years, pupils will learn diverse skills such as using banking facilities, planning journeys, filling in forms and letter writing, value for money comparisons, telephone skills, and so on. Pupil performance in each activity will be assessed by the teaching gaff although pupils will be encouraged to evaluate their own level of performance.

It is possible to take Caring Modules and Cookery Modules, or Caring Modules and Standard Grade Home Economics, or Social and Vocational Skills and Caring, or Home Economics.
