Standard Grade Modern Studies

Modern Studies
is a study of contemporary society using the skills of knowledge,
evaluating and investigating to focus on social, political and
economic issues at local, national and international levels. It
is not a course in the geography and the history of the modern
world; neither is it a study of current affairs although an awareness
of news coverage through TV and the press and an interest in the
world around us is a help.
The course in Third
Year consists of units of work involving social, political and
economic aspects of life in the United Kingdom. The units of work
include: the Elderly; Representation in a Democracy and the Unemployed.
At the end of Third Year the pupils engage in a 'mini investigation' of a topic of their choosing. This helps them with the Enquiry Skills aspect of Investigating which they are assessed on in the final exam.
In Fourth Year
the units of work are concerned with wider world issues. These
are: China and the Politics of Aid.
The teaching and learning of Modern Studies involves the use of worksheets, discussion, traditional blackboard explanation and self-study. Audio-visual aids and computers are available for accessing data.
In conducting the Investigation pupils will use self-study, interviewing, surveying, letter-writing, fieldwork, library research and visits to complete the task.
Pupils are assessed on the following
skills:
Pupils no longer have to submit an investigation for assessment but will continue to use investigation skills as part of the course.
Awards are available at Foundation, General and Credit levels. A Credit level pass will qualify the pupil to take a Higher Grade in one year.
