In June 1909 the Old Academy was opened. It cost £7215. The Old Academy is sited at the corner of Finlayson Street and Dennyduff Road.

On 23rd August 1932 Mr. William Kennedy took over as Rector of the Academy. He continued as Rector till his retirement in September 1962. During his time it was obvious that the Academy was too small for the demand placed on it. A new Academy designed to hold 1500 pupils was built in 1962 at a cost of approximately half a million pounds. The New Academy was officially opened on 20th September 1962 by Princess Margaret.

The school roll at the start of the century was about 100 pupils, by the 1930s the number had increased to about 500 pupils. During the 1980s the roll peaked at around 1750 pupils and at present it is 1200.
