"CELEBRATING TWENTY SPECIAL YEARS"
-------------------------------------------------JUNE 1999-----------------------------------------------
"Grease" is the word!
A leather jacket, a pair of sunglasses and looking cool ..... that's all you needed to have a great time at Hull New Theatre to watch the spectacular production of 'Grease'. Actually some of us only managed the looking cool bit - but that was enough!! It all started in the Student Centre at Ganton, as we boarded the buses we were already singing 'Beauty School Dropout" and 'Summer Loving'. Two bus loads full of be-boppin' students, not to mention the be-boppin' staff (who had to be dragged along ... I don't think) arrived at the theatre and guess where we were sitting? None other than the front two rows of the stalls, right in front of the stage - we could see the twinkle in Luke Goss' eye and the gel on his hair. Such great seats are thanks to Ian Simpson's and Mike O'Brien's forward thinking and early planning - many thanks to them for the best seats in the house. We know the story, we've sung the songs, we've danced to 'Greased Lightening' (no-one we know can dance to this without the pointy finger), we've combed our hair back in a quiff AND we've seen the film BUT until you're there watching it live, well as far as the Student Centre is concerned, you haven't lived. And twenty students can't be wrong !! or so they tell us.
What part did you like best? Did you have good fun? Wasn't the dancing super cool? Is Luke Goss, who played the male lead 'Danny' handsome? Aren't the songs just foot-tapping great? Wasn't the light show sensational? Our exclusive interviews with the students and exit poll survey revealed "Everything, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes." The hand jiving was so fast, it was incredible to watch. We tried some back at school the following week in our Maths lessons, remembering sequences and counting, we'll be at the auditions for extras next year. Sandy's transformation at the end, like a modern day Cinderella; the boy's rust box car becoming the slick, silver mean machine, rather like a modern day pumpkin: and the 'Happy Ending' for everyone meant that we were happily mesmerised throughout.
And the finale.... what a show waddy waddy, be-bop, de do-do time we had. A party finish with dancing in the audience and wait, what's this? Danny combing his hair, Danny looking around the audience, Danny spotting Jonathan Hoe......, Danny throwing Jonathan his comb. Well you couldn't have given us a better thrill than if we'd won the lottery (there are some staff who don't exactly go along with that bit). Thanks to all the students who were a credit to Ganton, with great manners, sensible behaviour and smiles as wide as the Humber Bridge. It would be great to do it again.

Ganton Year 1/2 Visit a Farm E - I -E - I - O
During the Summer Term we have been studying landscapes as part of our Geography topic. We have been busy creating a display in our classroom of a farm and have been learning the names of the animals. Our teacher plays a game where she makes an animal noise and we have to guess the animal! Then we have fun copying the noises the animals make. Soon we will be putting our wellies on and going to Cruckley Animal Farm to watch the cows being milked. We should hear a lot of noises then! If we are lucky we may see some baby pigs that will just gave been born and some lambs. We can buy a bag of food for 25p. to feed the animals as we walk around. We'll have to make sure they don't eat our fingers! After dinner we are going to another place to see some more cows. They are not on a farm but on Beverley Westwood. We are going to run up and down the hills and play in the woods.

Ganton Swimming Programme Y 3 -6
As the end of the school year is fast approaching, we would like to thank all of those who gave their time (and patience) to making the swimming programme a success. Special mention goes to Michelle Anderson, Maggie Hopkins, Rosie Jenkinson and Gina Mann for unfailingly giving up their Tuesday afternoons to splash around in the pool with us. We could not have done it without them! Also, the volunteer students from Hull Grammar School showed great enthusiasm and dedication. Thank you to Bill, Bong, Chris, Nicky, Holly and Rachel. We wish them luck in their future studies.
Awards have been presented to the following pupils so far this year:

Wilberforce House and Transport Museum
On the 4th March this year the Y5 - 6 class trooped off for the day to visit Wilberforce House and the Transport Museum (with the help of a few parent/sister volunteers - THANK YOU!). This tied in with the history curriculum as the students were studying Amy Johnson and William Wilberforce. The old-fashioned carriage ride in the Transport Museum was definitely one of the highlights of the day, as was lunch at Burger King in Princes Quay!

Theatre Visits
During the Spring Term we were lucky to have the opportunity of watching two theatre productions. The first was a visit from The West Midland Children's Touring Theatre who told the tale of how Prince Ivan journeyed through the Black Forest, across the Caspian Seas and over the Ural Mountains to find The Firebird.
As well as collective audience participation, several of the children went on stage to help the story unfold. Kayleigh Ball, Matthew Taylor, Damien Tranmer, Hannah White and Kelly Beecroft made wonderful debuts and kept the audience laughing.
The second theatre production featured The Clydebuilt Puppet Theatre who presented Indian Tales - stories of the Native Americans. The children were spellbound by a variety of exquisite puppets which told the tales of How the Raven Freed the Moon and The Thunderer. Wonderful lighting effects heightened the children's enjoyment and kept us all enthralled.

Free Books for Schools/Readathon/Hat Parade
A big thank you to everyone who has collected the Free Books for Schools tokens. We have collected 12,000 tokens and ordered approximately £300 worth of books. A special thank you to The Star Inn, Willerby, The Great Central, Willerby and Beaverlac who have been collecting for us and to Mark Huntley and the students in the Student Centre who have cut out and counted our in school collection. Please carry on bringing in the tokens as the promotion doesn't finish until July.
Sue Jones organised a sponsored hat and crisp/newspaper challenge. Thank you to all the children who participated. A fantastic £191 was collected which went to the Roald Dahl Foundation for children.
To mark the end of the Readathon Week all of the children made a hat for the Easter Hat Parade. We saw a variety of hats - Spot the Dog, The Lion King, Little Red Hens, Bo-Peep, to name but a few. As an added incentive to show our hats, each pupil received an Easter Egg and a beautiful hand made egg cup (with Cadbury's egg) from the students in the Student Centre.

Wolfreton Music Workshop
Six of our Children had a wonderful time at a one day music workshop held at Wolfreton School in April. We were invited to join in the workshop along with children from Anlaby Junior School, Anlaby Acre Head School, Carr Lane School and Springhead School. Wolfreton Lower School orchestra, choir and senior string group also took part,. The children representing Ganton were Sian Atkinson, Jamie O'Neill, Robert Patrick, Christopher Simpson, Marie Whitley and Lee Hilton.
In the morning, we split into four groups - strings, woodwind, percussion and vocal and went to various parts of the school to work on different pieces of music. After lunch, the four groups met up in the large West Hall to give a concert to visitors. It was nice to hear the other groups performing, as well as giving our own presentation as part of the combined choir. There was a grand finale when the choir sang in unison with all the instruments , including piano, strings, woodwind, brass and percussion. The finale piece was a new version of She'll Be Coming Round the Mountain, composed by two Year 9 girls from Wolfreton. It was very fast and lively and, with around two hundred children and eighty instruments joining in, it proved to be a very thrilling highlight to the day.

Netball Report - Ganton School
The East Riding of Yorkshire Sports Development Department last year launched their Sports Coaches into School Scheme, lovingly known as S.C.I.S.
The scheme promotes Specialist Sports Coaches going into Junior Schools in the East Riding and coaching the children in the skills of their individual sport. The idea is also to help the teachers and teachers aides carry on the sport when the coaches have completed the sessions.
Ganton School and St. Anne's School subscribed to the programme. This was a new activity for each school and a development educational area for the coaches. The idea behind both schools doing the sessions in tandem was so that, at the end of the sessions, a game could be organised between the two schools.
Ganton started the coaching sessions in late January and the All England Netball Coaches Helen Mitchell Smith and Susan Simmons organised the sessions into skill areas, initially concentrating on throwing and catching the ball. This further developed into sessions involving balance and body skills and culminated in shooting skills. This was thoroughly enjoyed by all students, who showed enthusiasm and continued commitment, as did all of the staff and other participants. The emphasis on teamwork was recognised by students and resulted in them playing the current All England Netball standard 'High Five'.
Without wishing to sound condescending regarding the effort of participation witnessed, it was rewarding for all to see that the immense physical application of students resulted in constructive game play. Such determination and a willingness to learn would put many a main stream school to shame.
The final game was at the Haltemprice Sports Centre on Wednesday, 17th March 1999. It was evident when the two school teams met that the comradeship extended beyond the individual team members and that students and staff alike encouraged and praised each other. The ability of the students to assist and involve each other in the game was a reflection of their enjoyment for the sport.
The winners of the game were Ganton School who won 3 - 0 with exceptional shooting from Steven McLean. However, it must be noted that this would not have been possible if the team had not managed to get the ball to him. There was some very good throwing and catching from both the teams,. There was also some very athletic defending from some of the St. Anne's team who were very unlucky not getting the ball through their netball post. All who took part in the game received a Certificate.
On evaluation of the sessions and concluding game, it can only be seen by the two coaches the steps forward that were gained by both teams. Both coaches enjoyed all the sessions, their involvement with all the children and staff and seeing both schools compete at a level they could not have foreseen in January.

Work Experience
Angela Sands from Ganton Student Centre has started working at Morrisons in Anlaby, initially for one day a week and, hopefully, extending this in the Autumn term. Angela is working alongside a member of Morrisons staff in the Flower and Plant Department every Wednesday.
The staff there are very friendly and supportive and the meals in the canteen are delicious, so Angela is enjoying this experience as well as learning a lot about shop work and answering customers' questions.
