School Events
Sports Day
Gargunnock Primary School has different teams for sports day including blue, red and green. The teams compete against each other, to get points. The points are added up as the day goes on, then finally we will be told at the end who the winning team is. The winning team gets a trophy. For sports day we have different races including the running race, obstacle race, bunny hop race, bean bag race, skipping race, sack race and the relay race. There are different races for different classes.
There is also a McLaren trophy that a boy and a girl from P6 or 7 can win. There is a series of sports events including high jump, long jump, 100 metre race and cricket ball throw. This takes a few weeks to complete.
Scottish Assembly
Every year in February the school holds a Scottish Assembly which is where the children dance, sing songs, recite poems and play instruments. All parents are welcome to come along and everyone appreciates the local minister coming and giving us a wonderful service. Girls and boys in P.4-7 have country dancing lessons throughout the year and a set of favourites are put together to perform at services and concerts. We have a teacher in the school who gives the older pupils recorder lessons and a wide variety of tunes are played every year. All the children help to decorate the large hall where the service takes place and it looks very bright by the time we have covered the walls with thistles, flags and shields. Everyone seems to enjoy themselves and it is a very fun fillied event.
Helping Sierra Leone
At the end of October we received a letter from a former Gargunnock P.S pupil. His letter told us of a small, misplaced community in Freetown, Sierra Leone. They were building a school and were asking for stationary items as they didn't have anything. We had several ideas on how to raise money but we decided for people to bake cakes etc. and hold a tuck shop. Primary 6/7 was split into groups to do the baking for at least one day and to be in charge of the shop. We held it once a day at morning break for five days and it was very successful. £116 was raised. Primary 6/7's teacher went to a local stationary shop to buy the items including jotters, paper, colouring equipment, pencils and rubbers. P 6/7 pupils wrote to the children telling them about themselves and the box of items was sent to Sierra Leone.
Later a certificate arrived awarding us for helping them even though it was a small deed. Pictures showing the children receiving the box, the school being built and the completed building. The pictures also showed a wall with the organisations that helped them to build the school, among them was Gargunnock Primary!
At our Scottish assembly we had a collection for the school which raised £60 and will be spent on more equipment.
We have been in a newspaper and a teacher's interview on the subject has been on the radio but pupils agree that helping the children was more important than anything else.
Presto Puppets
We have a visit from Presto Puppets every two years who put on a puppet show. They base their shows on stories like Beauty and the Beast, Snow Queen and The Firebird. When the show is over from p.3 and above stay to see the different designs and get to use some of the puppets.
Christmas Concert
Gargunnock Primary School has a different Christmas concert every year. This year the Christmas concert was called Gigantic Star. Some people had a piece to read. The piece has a little story about Mary and Joseph. The primary one class has a little play to go with our short story. Some of us had partner to read with. A primary 1 boy had a little story to read out.
