Athletic Records

New scientific methods of making physiological measurements on the human body have improved the performance of athletes and they can now run faster and jump higher than those of 100 years ago - the first under 3 minute mile has already been achieved. Sensors implanted in the body can record variations in temperature, blood pressure and other parameters and the data is recorded on an in-built memory device. At the end of a training session the athlete can connect these memory chips to a microcomputer which can read and analyse the data and suggest fitness programmes based on the analysis.

Books

Flat screen televisions with in-built aerial and electronics which include microcomputing capabilities are available in various sizes - from screens which can fill the whole wall in a room to ones which can be carried in a briefcase. These portable screens are carried about and used just like books were 100 years ago.

Since all literature, books and magazines are published electronically and held within mainframes they can be accessed by these flat screens which are then read like a book. These screens have replaced shelves of books and make whole libraries available to everyone from anywhere at anytime.

Language Translators

Hand held microcomputers are available which can translate between a number of languages. For people going on holidays or businessmen they are an ideal tool. Based on fifth generation computer technology (high density memory, parallel processing and very fast speed) and with voice input/output they are very user friendly and have vocabularies equal to that of most native speakers. People no longer have to learn languages at school since these machines are so readily available.

The input and output languages are easily selected from a database of over 80 different ones eg French to Russian. Linked via telecommunications to any mainframe they are an ideal interface and allow access to public databases in any country - the language of the data no longer being a difficulty for non-speakers of that language.

Travel

Concorde was the first commercial aircraft to fly supersonic. Developments in its design, advances in aeronautics and new generation of aircraft capable of flying above the atmosphere and travelling from Britain to Australia in less than 1 hour. These flights are expensive and are used mainly by businessmen and diplomats. Less innovative machines can however fly to Australia in less than 4 hours and are well used by the public.

Most of the development was carried out by British scientists and engineers but the expense of the project meant that international co-operation was needed for its construction.

Olympic Island

The cost of providing Olympic facilities became so expensive that no one city (and some countries) could no longer stage the games. The Olympic movement eventually created a complex with state-of-the-art facilities on one of the Greek islands so taking the games back to their roots and creating a permanent international environment. This provides an ideal training ground for all the world's athletes and is used by the general public when not staging the games.

Schools

Schools were places where children went everyday to be taught by teachers. With telecommunications, interactive video and home computers the role of schools has drastically changed. Lessons are broadcast vie satellite into every home in the country, exercises are set, homework is done on the home micro and transmitted down the phone lines to the mainframe which marks them and sets other work depending on the pupils answers. Courses on interactive video allow the pupil to follow their own path of study. Discs are available on every subject eg discs with 100's of physics experiments on them enable the pupil to do what would otherwise be an expensive, dangerous or difficult exercise and to control the experiment without the expense of using 'real apparatus'.
Learning is now a family centred activity with parents and children all involved and goes on for all of one's life. Pupils still attend schools but these are places for social activities like games, sports and drama since home learning prevents children from meeting others.

Lunar Holidays

An out-of-this-world experience.

With more leisure time the demand has grown for ever more exotic holidays. Round the moon trips or holidays on the lunar surface in a top class hotel is now possible for the general public. Such holidays have been available for 50 years but still tend to be expensive - hopefully they will come down in price and allow more people the chance to have the ultimate holiday. Mining for precious minerals only to be found on the moon has taken place for a number of years so very efficient and reliable spacecraft have been developed. These are based on the on the old shuttle of 100 years ago but while they were designed only for a few highly trained crew, modern craft can carry over 100 passengers at a time.
