Girvan is a small port in South West Scotland, situated about 20 miles south of the seat of local government in AYR. It has a population of about 8000. Local industry includes whisky distilling (GRANTS) a fabric manufacturer (Chiltern) and a plant where milk crumb is produced (NESTLE)

The harbour is not as active for fishing as it used to be, with the decline in the fishing industry. But it is still a favourite spot for tourists who come for weekend visits.

Many years ago the population doubled during the holiday season as people from GLASGOW visited Girvan for the Glasgow Fair holiday fortnight.
