Eco schools.
At our school we believe we have a duty to educate the children to understand that we are only on the Earth for a short time and that we should try our best to leave it in a healthy state. We are not doing a very good job at the moment!
The children are all encouraged to get involved in re-cycling and we collect aluminium cans, foil and paper in school, some of which we are actually paid for. We are re-cycling apple cores and banana skins in our compost maker in the courtyard for our herb garden. We are also busy monitoring our fuel use ie. gas, electricity, oil and water so that we see how much we use and what it costs. We are aiming to save over £500 this year and have received a grant of £2000 from CREATE to help with draught-proofing the school.
We have had a competition to see who could write a poem or essay on how we could become more eco friendly. Shabnum Gull won the competition and she won a video of 'Toy story' for her efforts.
We are also trying to become the first Junior school in Shropshire to gain ECO school status. This means we have to have everyone involved in all sorts of projects to do with our school environment and to have a school environment policy. It will take about a year to put our bid together.
