Rainfall by Matthew Ball.

Year 4/5 group are studying the weather as our topic for this term. I am looking at rain and rainfall & this is what I  have found out.

The rain is made when water vapour in the air cools. When the vapour cools it turns into droplets which turn into clouds. The droplets and the clouds thicken and turn grey, eventually the drops become so heavy that they start to fall. Water is always moving from land to sea to sky and back. This movement of water  is called the water cycle.

The amount of water that falls is very different from place to place, for example, in Chile about 1 mm of rain falls every year, but in eastern India the monsoon rains drop approximately 10.8 metres of rain every year.

A monsoon is a seasonal wind that brings heavy rain sometimes lasting from April-October in southern Asia.

Rain can be described as different things like it’s raining cats & dogs meaning its raining very hard. There is a saying its bucketing down.

Matthew Ball.

Rainfall in Hadley during May 2000.

There were 16 days without any rain at all so 15 with rain. The rainiest day was on May 27th with 13.5 mm and the total rainfall for the month was 33.7 mm. Compare this with Chile and India!!
