Communications and Networking - Advanced Unit 4

This unit requires students to investigate developments in electronic communications and to set up and use hardware and software to transfer files and communicate interactively. They are required to investigate computer networks and to use a computer network to undertake a range of activities. The unit extends the skills and knowledge covered in Unit 4 at Intermediate level.

The resources required for this unit comprise of stand-alone computers with the addition of a modem or alternatively a null modem as described in Element 4.2, together with communications software, network cards, network servers and network software.

Useful sources of information are textbooks on data communications and local area networks, computer magazines, and companies which manufacture communications hardware or software and network software, or which offer network access facilities and support.

Element 4.1 requires students to explain network services used for electronic communications, describe the system components and standards for electronic communication, and explain the purpose of the protocol parameters and modes of electronic communications.
