The painting is of a street in the night. You're looking down the street. We think it's a French town in the 18th century, because there are no cars and bikes. There's a cafe on the left, with a terrace and a sunblind to cover it. The street is made of rounded stones. All houses are attached to each other. The ones in the far end of the street are black and the ones in the front are dark blue with yellow light coming out of the small windows, because it's dark. The sky is dark blue with big yellow stars. There are about seven people on the street, which are painted very vaguely. There's a waiter on the terrace and about nine people. The orange light from the cafe lightens the wall left of the terrace and the bottom side of the sunblind. The angle of perspective is exactly from the right hand side of the terrace quite close to the ground. There is a warm and cosy mood in the painting. The painting is rectangular and in portrait format. The painting is quite realistic, but everything is a bit vague. |
