Highsted School

Italy Trip 1998

On 13th February 43 students from Highsted (including four from the local boys' school, Borden) and four members of staff from Highsted flew out to Vico Equase in the Bay of Naples , Italy , for a combined Classical Civilisation / Archaeology / Geography trip. map

Many interesting and exciting places were visited including Cumae , Pezznoli, Solfatara and Sorrento , but for many the highlights were the ascent to Vesuvius , the visit to Pompeii and the trip to the beautiful island of capri Capri. At Pozzuoli , Paestum, Cumae and PompeiiMr Chambers was somewhat carried away talking about Romans and Greeks whilst Mr Howes talked Geography and Geology amongst the sulphuric fumes of Solfatara .

lava Fortunately everybody made it to the top of Vesuvius (and back again). That may not be possible in the near future, given the active nature of this volcano. Besides Mrs Perkin has only just regained her stomach from the road bends on its lower slopes!

Hail Caesaer Back at the hotel the party had attracted the unwanted attention of local Italian lads, but these were sensibly ignored. The hotel was so impressed by the lovely atmosphere that on the last night were allowed to take over the main bar and lounge areas for a part and ad hoc disco. Awards were made to every student on the trip (for biggest fashion victim, strangest comment made etc.) and all recipients had to show proskynesis (bowing gesture) to the ludi magister classicus Imperatur Marcus' te laudamus' Chambers.

The journey home would have made Odysseus proud in terms of endurance, first a coach to Napoli airport , then two hours later an internal flight to Milan , another two hours later a two and a half hour flight to Gatwick and finally a further two hours coach trip back to school.
