Alpe d. Huez 1999

On the 2ndof April 1999 pupils and teachers left Highsted School at 6.45pm for a 14 hour journey to their destination of Alpe d. Huez ski resort in the French Alps.

The journey included a ferry trip from Dover to Calais and a coach journey that included many stops. We finally arrived at the resort at about 1.00pm (French time) with a coach full of very tired teachers and pupils.

After unpacking and getting our boots and skis, we were ready for a week full of fun, snow and skiing.

Our first day skiing began the following day on the Sunday. We were given a wake up call from Mrs A.K at 7.15 am and had to be ready and dressed for breakfast by 7.45am. At 8.30am we all gathered in the boot room ready to walk to the lifts that would take us to the slopes. We skied from 9.00am until 11.00am when we had lunch. Our lunch was prepared by the hotel staff and consisted of a roll, fruit, chocolate bar and a drink. We then continued skiing from 1.15pm until 3.15pm.

In the afternoons we were allowed to do whatever we wanted as long as we stayed in groups of 3 of more. We had a general meeting a 6.00pm most nights and then dinner was served at 7.00pm.

Dinner was 3-course meal (which got a mixed reaction from the pupils and teachers) apart from Thursday night, when we had chicken and chips.

In the evening we did different activities arranged by the teachers and our rep Nick. These activities included ice skating, a treasure hunt, an intelligence quiz, karaoke and a visit to the local arcade.

On the last night we left at 8.00pm (French time) and travelled through the night to Calais, to catch our return ferry. We were all sad to leave.

Everybody had a brilliant time and we can. t wait until next year!!
