Castles of the past

The Motte and Bailey castles. The first type of castles were Motte & Bailey castles. The Motte was a mound of the earth and on the top of it was a wooden tower. The Motte was the safest place as it was the hardest to attack. The Bailey was a large courtyard surrounded by a wooden fence. This is where all the soldiers lived. Around the whole Bailey was a ditch or a river bank.
