Pupils work in groups and participate in a range of
curriculum linked activities which produce material for
publication as a web site.
The web site will take the form of an archive map of
Roath which has clickable links to a number of different
topic areas. An
example of how the web site might evolve can be viewed by
clicking here.
| National
Curriculum Links |
In developing the web site, pupils will
meet specific requirements from the National Curriculum
in History, Geography, English, Art and Information
Technology and have the opportunity
to acquire key skills in these areas:
| History |
Study Units
- 3a (The Victorians), 3b (Britain Since 1930)
and 5, (Local History) |
| |
All Key
Elements will be covered. Pupils will look at
chronological
development.
They will focus on why Roath developed in the way
it did and examine
social, cultural and economic change. They will be encouraged to develop
their own interpretation
based on evidence and
will use a range of resources. They will communicate their
understanding of the local history and present the
information in a
number of different ways on the web site. |
| |
|
| English |
Speaking
Listening - Pupils will interview older
members of the community, discuss the
development of the web site, and present information to a group. |
| |
Reading -
They will read both prose narrative and
non fiction
accounts in the form of newspaper articles,
reports etc. |
| |
Writing -
They will write for a specific audience and
purpose and also
creatively in both prose and poetry. |
| |
|
| Geography |
Pupils will be
encouraged to make observations and ask questions about the development of settlement in
the
locality of their school.
They will collect
and record evidence.
They will communicate
findings. They will use and make maps and
plans. They will
interpolate from secondary sources such as photographs. They will look at changing land use and
associated lifestyles and consider the human impact on the locality. |
| |
|
| Art |
Pupils will be
given an opportunity to record their
responses to the
natural and made environment of their locality, collecting visual
evidence and experimenting with
the presentation of visual material. |
| |
|
| Information Technology
|
Pupils will use IT
equipment and software to communicate ideas and
information in a variety of forms, incorporating
text, graphs, pictures and sound and to organise, reorganise and analyse
ideas and information. |
|
Thanks to the involvement of Roath Library and Community
Education, pupils will also be working with older members
of the community to exchange stories, knowledge and
skills. The children will learn how Roath has changed in
recent years and hear the experiences of local people who
lived in Roath during the War. In turn, they will be able
to help older people record their stories and memories
using new technology.
An essential part of the project will be IT training for staff. Teachers will learn, in
a practical way, how the Internet can be used as a
teaching and learning resource in the primary classroom.

After the completion of the initial
project, it is hoped that the Roath Community Web will
continue to grow as an educational and community resource
and involve more schools and community groups in its
development.
This development will be subject to securing further
funding.
