WDES Bulletin 07/00

To: Chairmen of Governing Bodies of Roman Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Westminster
Cc: Headteachers

7 December 2000

1 Retirement of Joan Leith.

Joan Leith wishes to thank the many headteachers, governors and staff who have sent their good wishes on her retirement. Joan writes:

'I am astounded and humbled by your generosity, which enables me to plan a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in the spring. This is a long unfulfilled ambition and one in which my many friends in Westminster will be in my thoughts and prayers. Thank you all for this great kindness and for your friendship and support over the last 10 years.'

2 David Squires

It is with regret that we have to inform schools that David Squires is on sick leave. At the time of writing it is not known for how long David will be indisposed. Schools should, in the first instance, turn to their preferred technical consultants for advice, but in an emergency contact should be made with the Department of Schools.

8 Education Sunday

Next year, Sunday 11 February 2001 is Education Sunday. The theme is Citizenship. Schools are invited to prepare and hold events and liturgies in the preceding week to celebrate the great enterprise of education, with special reference this year to education for citizenship. It may be particularly appropriate to plan a special ceremony/mention for governors, who so significantly fulfil their civic duty through volunteering as governors for our schools. On this Sunday is also held the annual collection for the Catholic Education Service who will be sending out further information.
