Takahe Porphyrio mantelli - New Zealand Distribution: Murchison Mountains South Island. Habitat: Alpine tussock grassland. Numbers: 200. Threats: predation by introduced mammals. Status: Endangered.

Kea Nestor notabilis - New Zealand Distribution: South Island. Habitat: Mountains near tree-line. Numbers: <10000. Threats: persecution. Status: near-threatened.

 Black Stilt  Himantopus novaezelandiae - New Zealand Distribution: South Island. Habitat: Wetlands. Numbers: less than 60. Threats: numerous, including hybridisation with Pied Stilt, habitat destruction and predation by feral cats and ferrets. Status: Critical.
