Key to Text Moths of Northamptonshire

Key to Map
  Flame Carpet Xanthorhoe designata

  Status: Resident.

Distribution and Abundance: Fairly common.

Primary Habitat: Woodland.

Flight Period: Double brooded in May and again in August.

Observations: As the food plant of the caterpillar in the wild seems to be unknown, it is impossible to compare its range with that of the moth. Generally it is encountered in small numbers in most woodlands. In 1994 it was recorded at Hazelborough Forest on 1 April 1994 much earlier than its' normal flight time.

L.O.N.: 1907. Many from Kettering, northwards. Common, but does not appear in Northampton lists.

First Record: 1842, Clark.
