Key to Text Moths of Northamptonshire

Key to Map
  Purple Thorn Selenia tetralunaria

  Status:  Resident.

Distribution and Abundance:  Common.

Primary Habitat:  Woodland.

Flight Period:  Double brooded in March and April and again in July and August.

Observations:  All detailed site records that I hold show more moths of the summer brood having been recorded at light than those of the spring brood. Typically, the Rothamsted trap at Fineshade shows the moth being recorded in five years out of eight and that the spring brood was only seen in one year.

L.O.N.:  1906. Near Oundle, Kettering, Barnwell. Uncommon.

First Record: 1882, Hull & Tomalin.
