Trip Report: Sri Lanka, 22-28 October 2000

Introduction
Participants on this one-week birdwatching trip to Sri Lanka were: Jeff Blincow, Robert Bullock, Nigel Goodgame, Mark Piper, Nick Roberts and Rob Woodall.
Flights from London to Colombo were direct by Air Lanka.
For all ground arrangements one need go no further than Baur & Co Ltd.

Transport
Baurs arranged for us a Toyota Hiace Minibus and driver. We were picked up and dropped off at the airport and had our return flights confirmed for us. We travelled 1000km in one week that cost us approximately £160 for the vehicle and driver. The four-wheel drive vehicle to get to Sinharaja cost approximately £35 each way.

Accommodation
Baurs booked our accommodation at Martin’s Place - Sinharaja and arranged the four-wheel drive vehicle to get us there. Our driver arranged hotel accommodation for us each night. Food and accommodation cost less than £10 per person per day.

Driver
Baurs have an excellent driver/birder called Sunil Alwis who helpfully understood our precise requirements on a one-week birdwatching trip to Sri Lanka. He was always flexible and accommodating and was the key to our successful trip. Sunil knows the sites very well and this saved us much valuable time. He also has a sound knowledge of the birds which was of great assistance in finding the endemics.

There are several species that occur with a restricted range to South-west/Southern India and Sri Lanka (e.g. Sri Lanka Frogmouth). Sri Lanka also has a very high number of sub-species and we made an effort to see these as well(we saw 45 out of 58). With the current volatile state of systematics it is prudent to insure against future splits. Only a few years ago there were 22 accepted endemics to Sri Lanka and now there are 26. Sri Lanka Stilt is already split by Howard and Moore and so was viewed as number 27 by me.
