Tourists who come to St-Petersburg in summer can enjoy
watching the "White Nights" celebration in June, when the night lasts only
an hour. The first performance is given in the famous Mariinsky Theatre.
Tourists can also see the raising of the bridges on the Neva river. It is
possible to take a trip on a ship and to watch the beautiful
architecture on the banks of the numerous canals and rivers. The
founder of St-Petersburg, Peter I, planned it to be "the city
of the water", that is why our city is often called "the
northern Venice". Many Russian writers ascribe the speciality of
St-Petersburg to the magic of water surrounding it.
