GCSE PROJECTS: Presenting Data

There are many ways you can present data in projects. Remember any method you use must be accurate, relevant and should help your analysis. Maps should be used at appropriate scales and must include a title, scale, northing and source.

To earn the top level (5-6 marks) for data presentation, the AQA marks scheme states candidates should "use accurately a range of more complex techniques, some of which are ICT based, to present and develop the information appropriate to their investigation; and express ideas in a clear, fluent and logical form using precise and accurate English". It is important that your project includes a range of different data presentation techniques (including useful basic ones such as bar charts) and each one is accurately drawn.

Below are a few popular complex ideas:

Possible "complex" data presentation techniques:

  • cross-sections
  • isolines
  • land use grids on a base map
  • field sketches & annotated photographs
  • proportional symbols - e.g. arrows or circles
  • overlays showing growth of a settlement
  • scatter graphs
