Weather and Climate The difference between weather and climate.

The distinction between weather and climate comes down to scale.

Weather is something that happens on a small scale. It happens locally within a short time (minutes to months)

Climate happens on a much larger scale. The climate applies to large areas of land and is concerned with the long term behaviour of the atmosphere. The climate of an area is discovered by studying it over many years and allows you to predict the temperatures, pressures, wind, rain etc.

For example: We know that in Britain it gets cold in the winter and warm in the summer. This is climate.
But we don't know if it is going to be warm tomorrow or not. This is the weather.

Weather forcasting can be done using satellite images. Use the satellite pictures below to make your own weather map!
